30 September: Traders issued CoJ document indicating that many of them are allowed to be trading

8 October: Mayor Parks Tau goes on inner-city walkabout

24 October: Traders protest march (Organisers: ATC, ASITF, WASP)

24 October: Trader associations and COSATU meet city representatives to discuss evictions and raise demands

1 November: City due to address trader associations on the City’s short-term plan for street trade

3 November: Deal to begin re-opening trading stalls struck. To be implemented starting 4 November

8 November: Lawyers representing the hawkers today sent a letter to city officials demanding that they stop demolishing the stalls by Monday and that they provide detailed information about the city’s plan to relocate the hawkers

9/10 November: Hawkers march from Mary Fitzgerald Square. Memorandum issued, with a list of 29 requests. The assistant director of petitions for the municipality, Peter Kute, signed the memorandum saying: “We are inviting the executive to the offices tomorrow to discuss their requests.”
